Unfortunately, it's often easy to get stuck in the muck of life, so we wanted to offer some prayers you can say to help refocus your heart on God and the things that matter.

From asking God to, "Create in me a clean heart" to praying, "Change me, oh God," there are many ways to seek the Lord's guidance and get back on track. Here are just five prayers to consider as you embark on life's journey:

Create in Me a Clean Heart: Guide Me

"Then he said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.'" - Luke 9:23 (NIV)

As Christians, we're called to deny ourselves and take up our cross daily, as Luke 9:23 states. But for those who have fallen away from the faith, this Bible verse can be a prayer of change that will help shift their mindset to recenter their life around Christ. Each day, we must make the conscious choice to put God's will above our own.

Lord, I thank you for all you've done for me. I just pray that you would change me, oh God. Please guide my heart, and help me to grow into the person you want me to be. Rather than me following my own ways, please purify my heart and make me more like you. Please guide my path and help me take steps that will guide me toward your plan for my life and not my own whims. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Change My Heart, Oh God: Seeing With God's Lens

"He must become greater; I must become less.” - John 3:30 (NIV)

Those who have become distracted or distant from the faith can oftentimes become focused solely on themselves, their own desires and own will for their lives. John 3:30 is a prayer for a change of heart. Through this Bible verse, we are reminded that our lives are meant to lead others to God, not to ourselves. It reminds us to stay humble and focused on being a light in the darkness that points to Christ.

Lord, create in me a clean heart. Life is so complicated, busy and chaotic. But amid the mess, please give me the strength and courage to see people, places, things and events through Your lens. Please guide me and change me, oh God. Please give me Your heart for others and the world around me. Each and every day, help me to see, through Your eyes, the truth of what is, what has been and what will one day come. In the name of Your son Jesus I pray, Amen.

Create in me a Clean Heart: Help Me in My Struggles

"What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?" - Romans 6:1-2 (NIV)

We know that we will encounter struggles in this life. It's how we deal with them and respond that matters to God. When we turn back to Him when we're struggling, we can trust that His strength will carry us through our current trials and tribulations. Whatever you may be currently struggling with, ask God to change your heart to have hope and be your strength during this time.

Lord, you know my struggles. Please create in me a clean heart, God, and please change me. Sin is something that has crept into my life, and I've continued to struggle with [insert specific issue(s)]. I know that I can only overcome these struggles through You, so I ask that You guide me and bless me, Lord. I ask that You help me to be the person You want me to be. Thank You for Your love and guidance. Change my heart, oh God and make me more like You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

A Prayer for Change for Others: Guidance

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship." - Romans 12:1 (NIV)

As Christians, we're also called to pray for those in need in our community. Our friends and family aren't immune from suffering in this life either. When we hear of those around us who are also struggling, a prayer for change is exactly the thing we can do to help them.

Lord, I know [insert name] is struggling. Please come alongside [him/her] and provide Your love, grace and guidance. I pray for Your strength, guidance and wisdom for [insert name]. I know You have the ability to change or transform anyone, so I just lift [him/her] up to You today. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Change me, Oh God: Courage

"Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it." - Luke 17:33 (NIV)

At the end of the day, everything in this life is just temporary as we prepare for the next life. When we feel we need a change of heart, it's important to keep this in mind. Let us remember to choose things that lead us to heaven and eternal life as we pray for change.

Lord, I am so grateful for Your love and guidance. I ask You to help my with my battles over fear and worry. Most of all, I pray for courage. Create in me a clean heart, God, and help me to have the faith and courage to overcome any fears. Lord, there is so much uncertainty in life, but I trust that you will guide me and sustain me. Please give me the courage to be the person, friend and loved one You created me to be. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
