Galatians 2 is filled with a great deal of fascinating details and theology, but in this Galatians 2 commentary we're going to focus on just two verses: Galatians 2:20-21.

First, though, let's explore Galatians 2:20, specifically, as Paul proclaims an essential truth that is at the core of the Christian experience:

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Upon reflection, Galatians 2:20 offers some essential truths to ponder. First and foremost, the verse deals with identity.

Galatians 2: Finding Our Identity

The world offers a variety of views on identity. With memes and proclamations telling us to "follow your heart" and to "look inside ourselves," much of today's feel-good commentary focuses on our own ideas, thoughts, feelings and whims.

But Paul is speaking about something completely different; he's speaking about finding our identity in Christ. When he says "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live," he's saying that he has given his life to Jesus and is no longer living for himself.

Paul drives that point home in Galatians 2:20 when he proclaims, "But Christ lives in me." We are all called to embrace and accept Jesus, as is detailed here.

Galatians 2 Commentary: Jesus Died For Us

The gospels make it clear that Jesus died for us, but Paul expands on this in Galatians 2:20 when he proclaims, "The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

This verse speaks to Paul's faith in Christ — that Jesus died for him and that, in turn, he lives by faith in Christ. In whatever we face or experience, we're called to rely in Jesus, an example set by Paul.

Galatians 2:20: Faith > Rules

The final truth we'll explore in this Galatians 2 commentary is found in Galatians 2:21 (NIV), which reads, "I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"

The point here is that faith in Christ saves us — not following rules and regulations. It's not the law that fixes our hearts, but when our hearts are fixed on Christ ... that's when we're living in line with the gospel.
