Woodlawn's Real Tony Nathan Speaks on Race & Giving It All to God

By Justina Miller on Jul 30, 2016 9:00:13 AM

It wasn’t until 1971 that Birmingham’s Woodlawn High School finally desegregated. While many students, teachers and faculty did not welcome the transition, the football team was the first to reconcile their differences. This short interview from CBN’s The 700 Club features Tony Nathan or “Touchdown Tony,” who was only a freshman when Woodlawn desegregated. Nathan was on the football team and was not only instrumental in the team’s success on the field, but also one of the first to practice peace in an environment inundated with racism. By their example, the Woodlawn football team generated a change in their school and eventually in the whole city of Birmingham. These incredible events inspired the movie, “Woodlawn,” starring Caleb Castille, Sean Astin, and Nic Bishop.

By Justina Miller on Jul 8, 2016 12:00:00 PM

Tim Tebow has never let what is unpopular or countercultural stop him from proclaiming his love for Christ. His latest move: starring in a TV show where he helps people build homes for their heroes. Today releases an action-packed film that also happens to be about doing the unpopular for the sake of love. The film is called “Beyond the Mask,” and Tebow would resonate with the film’s main characters who, like him, work for the good and the rights of the people they encounter. In Christian movies like “Beyond the Mask,” we expect to see some great heroism; here are seven times Tim Tebow showed us it can still happen in real life.

Healing Power of God on the Playing Field

By Justina Miller on Jun 14, 2016 9:00:00 AM

A couple days before the exclusive release of “Woodlawn,” a film about a football team that played for the glory of God, two Cincinnati high-school lacrosse teams had their own experience of God on the playing field. The Centerville Elks and the Moeller Crusaders were in the second quarter of their game with the Elks way ahead at 8-2. A Crusader threw the ball across the field and unintentionally hit Elks captain, senior Grant Mays, on the chest below his heart. Mays scooped up the ball and began running toward the goal, but within seconds, he collapsed and lay unconscious on the grass.

Alabama Recruits Christian Quarterback: “All Glory Goes to Him.”

By Justina Miller on May 17, 2016 7:00:00 AM

With Pure Flix’s forthcoming release of Woodlawn later this month, Alabama’s announcement of a Tua Tagovailoa as their new class of 2017 quarterback is well timed. Like Tony Nathan, the main character in "Woodlawn," Tua Tagovailoa is excited to play for the Crimson Tide because of their impressive history of having the number one recruiting class. But there is something else that makes these two Alabama football players so much alike: their faith in God. Tua Tagovailoa has not been shy in speaking of his faith, and recently told KHON2 that Tuscaloosa made him feel right at home.
