West, 43, beautifully explained why he believes expository preaching is so impactful.

Before we dive into what he said, though, let's take a quick look at the main difference between two of the most common forms of sermoning: exposition vs. topical. GotQuestions.org provides the distinction:

Expository preaching presents the meaning and intent of a biblical text, providing commentary and examples to make the passage clear and understandable. The word exposition is related to the word expose—the expository preacher’s goal is simply to expose the meaning of the Bible, verse by verse.

As a method, expository preaching differs from topical preaching and textual preaching. To prepare a topical sermon, the preacher starts with a topic and then finds a passage in the Bible that addresses that topic.

Now that we've cleared that up, we can explore what West said about why he so enjoys expository preaching.

Rather than listening to pastors who close up their Bibles and just talk to congregations, he prefers those who delve deep into scripture.

“There’s some type of preachers, they get up, they have the Bible in their hands, and they close the Bible and they just talk for two hours. Some do have anointing," he said. "But the expository preachers go line for line [through scripture]."

What West said next, though, was fascinating, as he explained why he seeks knowledge about how to put biblical truth into practice.

"For me, it’s like, I come from entertainment. I got so much sauce. I don’t need to sauce on the Word," he said. "I need the Word to be solid food that I can understand exactly what God was saying to me."
