9/11: A Time for Reflection and Prayer

By Greg Gudorf on Sep 11, 2017 11:00:00 AM

September 11 was a pivotal moment in American history. When the World Trade Center towers fell, many Americans felt their sense of security vanish as well. Before, enemies attacked on foreign soil, but Americans felt that they were safe at home. Suddenly, terrorists executed not just one, but multiple attacks, and everything changed. God’s Word is a resource that provides hope when our fortresses crumble. When our perceptions are shattered and our security is revealed to be just an illusion, God is still in control. Here are ways to commemorate 9/11 this year.

Pure Flix Partners with AMIKids

By Greg Gudorf on Aug 26, 2017 7:00:00 AM

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:14-17 ESV)

This month, the family is incredibly excited to announce a new partnership with AMIkids, a not-for-profit organization that empowers and changes the lives of at-risk youth all over the country. It was founded in 1969 by Frank Orlando, a Chief Juvenile Court Judge in Fort Lauderdale, who was frustrated after seeing that people who have run-ins with the law at a young age often re-offend later in life. He knew something had to change for these kids to learn how to channel their energy in a positive way for a better future.

Kentucky is a religious, conservative state where 76 percent of residents say they are Christian, and with the passing of the Bible Literacy Law it may be the first of many states to adopt a policy on faith-based electives.

United We Stand: Restoring the Unity We Had Days After 9/11

By Justina Miller on Sep 11, 2016 7:00:00 AM

Each September 11th, we remember the atrocities that are so painful to resurrect in our mind's eye. We think of parents who didn’t take the train home, kids who will always remember their firefighting dads as heroes, so many last “I love you’s,” and even more that are still said but only heard by ears in heaven.

We also remember the spirit that came about after the rubble: tiny American flags tucked into so many random spaces, big flags waving on every storefront, candle lit services, prayers said in unison, and hands clutching a stranger’s. Then there’s the famous phrase that made it onto a postage stamp: “United We Stand.”

Woodlawn's Real Tony Nathan Speaks on Race & Giving It All to God

By Justina Miller on Jul 30, 2016 9:00:13 AM

It wasn’t until 1971 that Birmingham’s Woodlawn High School finally desegregated. While many students, teachers and faculty did not welcome the transition, the football team was the first to reconcile their differences. This short interview from CBN’s The 700 Club features Tony Nathan or “Touchdown Tony,” who was only a freshman when Woodlawn desegregated. Nathan was on the football team and was not only instrumental in the team’s success on the field, but also one of the first to practice peace in an environment inundated with racism. By their example, the Woodlawn football team generated a change in their school and eventually in the whole city of Birmingham. These incredible events inspired the movie, “Woodlawn,” starring Caleb Castille, Sean Astin, and Nic Bishop.

Don’t Say that: When the Name of Jesus Makes Others Uncomfortable

By Justina Miller on May 25, 2016 9:00:00 AM

In Shakespeare’s, Romeo and Juliet, Juliet asks her beloved Romeo, “What’s in a name? A rose by any other word would smell as sweet.”

If Juliet only knew, names are much more than mere words. There’s a whole study devoted to personal names, called onomatology, which examines the way names convey a person’s place of origin, their family, and trade. In the Bible, names were sometimes used to literally describe a person’s character, as in the case of Israel (which means “having power with God”) and Peter (which means “rock”).

Study Shows Christianity is Contagious

Did you know that Christians make up nearly a third of the world’s religions, according to the Pew Research Center? Christians are also so spread out on the globe, that no one region can claim to be the center of Christianity. These two facts tell us that, if nothing else, Christianity is contagious. Recognizing the countless research on the spread of harmful epidemics, such as the flu or pests in crops, the Santa Fe researchers decided to look at beneficial epidemics, like positive behaviors and good viruses.
