"Everybody Loves Raymond" and "The Middle" star Patricia Heaton has some advice for anyone seeking to escape the "vulgar, hate-spewing brainless, illiterate world we live in" — and it involves reading a popular 20th century philosopher.

Heaton — who was clearly referring to the troubled and divisive times in which we live — took to Twitter last week to encourage fans to read G.K. Chesterton, a British author, lay theologian and philosopher who lived from 1874 to 1936.

Chesterton is known, among other things, for his persuasive arguments in favor of Christianity.

"I’ve been reading #GKChesterton at night before falling asleep. If you want to be transported out of this vulgar, hate-spewing brainless, illiterate world we live in, GK is your man," Heaton tweeted. "Witty, optimistic, learned, insightful, gentle, joyous - a balm for the soul."

As Faithwire noted, Chesterton, who was Catholic, had a profound impact on many other thought leaders and authors, with his arguments swaying J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, among many others. Faithwire's Tré Goins-Phillips wrote:

"There is a long history among Christians of enjoying — and being transformed by — Chesterton’s writings. In fact, the philosopher’s works, particularly his 1908 book “Orthodoxy,” played an enormous role in the Christian conversions of both J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis."
