Whether believers should celebrate Earth Day has been debated for years. Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a grassroots effort in response to a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. It was popular among college students at the time, and it eventually led to the creation of the EPA and many other legislative acts to protect animals and the environment. The holiday is now supported in the teachings of public elementary schools across the nation.
Christians that are opposed to Earth Day have expressed concerns over the widely held belief that people are causing climate change which will eventually make the planet unlivable. While this is often a debate that follows party lines, it also infuriates some Christians who believe that God made the earth for His people and that He is in control of what happens to it. Those who oppose Earth Day don’t see any evidence of global warming and believe that humans were given dominion over the earth and commanded to subdue it. They insist that we shouldn’t live in fear of the planet dying when God is in control. Other complaints are that Earth Day is just about politics and evolution rather than about the biblical teachings of creation.
Christians that support Earth Day find this belief a little short sighted because there are many occasions where people have polluted and damaged parts of the environment. In fact, in some cities, pollution is so bad that people have a higher risk of developing lung cancer. Rev. Rebekah Simon-Peter, who promotes green churches, says, “You can’t love God and ignore the earth.” For her and other Christians that have embraced Earth Day, it is about using our stewardship over the world to make it a better place for family and friends.
“You can’t love God and ignore the earth.”
Where do you fall in this spectrum? Are you for or against Earth Day? Either way, Earth Day is a great occasion for Christians to revisit their beliefs on creation. There are several powerful documentaries on PureFlix.com that celebrate the world God has made. Here are a few of our favorites:
1. Incredible Creatures That Defy Evolution Series
Have you ever wondered if there really are creatures that produce fire to defend themselves or how a giraffe gets a drink without causing lethal blood pressure to the brain? This series focuses on various specific animal species that are evidence that evolution couldn’t be true. Each series consults experts in science and biology that explain how each of these animals simply can’t be explained by evolution.
2. Evolution’s Achilles Heel
In today’s world, evolution is presented as fact, claiming to be infallible, but this movie uses 3D animations and dramatic footage to help show how the theory’s supposed strengths are, in fact, its fatal flaws.
3. Creation or Evolution?
Can the Bible’s account of creation be reconciled with modern scientific fact? Whether you’re a parent, teacher, student, or are simply curious, you’ll appreciate this candid and informative perspective and analysis of both the geological record and the biblical account of creation.
4. Evolution Vs God
Some believe that science and creationism do not mix, but Ray Comfort tries to determine otherwise. Supported by testimony from some of the leading evolutionary scientists from the world’s top universities, Comfort believes that creationism is not only correct, but that it is proven through science.
5. God of Wonders
This movie is a remarkable journey of discovery exploring God’s handiwork and what His creation reveals about His character. Survey the unimaginable size of the universe and ponder the vast energy present in all matter. Through creation, we glimpse His power, wisdom, majesty, and care.
