It’s not a scene you’d expect in a Christian movie: teenagers in a dark, loud living room, holding red plastic cups. But the high school party scenes in the Christian movie, “I’m Not Ashamed,” are actually some of the most profound. This telling of Rachel Joy Scott’s story brings her internal struggle realistically to the surface. It’s a tension every Christian teenager experiences: the choice to fit in, or stand out but stand alone.

Should Christians Celebrate Earth Day?

By Julie Tronsen on April 21, 2017

Whether believers should celebrate Earth Day has been debated for years. Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a grassroots effort in response to a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. It was popular among college students at the time, and it eventually led to the creation of the EPA and many other legislative acts to protect animals and the environment. The holiday is now supported in the teachings of public elementary schools across the nation.

Religious Freedom v. Discrimination: A Christian Response

By Sarah Hartland on April 18, 2017

It is a debate that has taken center stage in recent years: Which should we value more -- freedom of religion or freedom from discrimination? The First Amendment of the United States Constitution bars Congress from enacting “an establishment of religion,” or from prohibiting “the free exercise thereof.” It sounds simple enough, but consider the opposing interpretations of that Amendment that have lead to landmark Supreme Court decisions like Obergefell v. Hodges (which legalized same-sex marriage in 2015).

How to Forgive Others by Remembering the Cross this Easter

By Julie Tronsen on April 14, 2017

Sometimes it is really hard to forgive someone who has hurt you, especially if it is a family member. There can be a lot of tough emotions involved, even if you want to forgive them. But at Easter, the cross is a reminder of why we should do everything we can to forgive others. Knowing that Jesus suffered such extreme pain and death because he loved us can be a motivating factor in our willingness to forgive. He forgives us of our sins so we should be willing to forgive others. In Matthew 6:14 (NIV) it says, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

By Brian Dodd on September 26, 2016

The following was originally published on "Brian Dodd on Leadership," a leadership blog found here, after the theatrical release of "October Baby" in 2012. It is reprinted with permission on Pure Flix Insider. You can watch "October Baby" any time on PureFlix.com.

Today I chose "October Baby" over "Hunger Games" and I am glad I did!  "October Baby" is an incredibly moving story that tells us the importance that every human life has.  This film by Jon and Andrew Erwin follows the story of a college student named Hannah, played by Rachel Hendrix. Because of some physical issues, Hannah discovers she is adopted as a result of being abandoned after a failed abortion attempt.

The following are 11 leadership quotes and principles from this incredible movie that everyone should see:

How to Forgive Yourself So You Can Forgive Others

By Sarah Hartland on September 23, 2016

There are few topics more universally poignant than forgiveness. We all have someone we have forgiven and someone who has forgiven us. In the family movie, “October Baby,” almost every character struggles through forgiveness in one way or another. For example, the main character, Hannah, is an abortion survivor who struggles to forgive her birth mother. Other characters in the film wrestle with what some would say is an even harder kind of forgiveness: forgiving themselves.

Science and Faith are More Similar Than You Think

By Sarah Hartland on September 8, 2016

“I’m not much of a faith guy.”

“Really? Well I think science requires faith, Simon. I mean, we know there’s gravity, we can even measure it, but we don’t know the source of its strength. You believe in electricity- you can even manipulate it. But you don’t know where the electron gets its energy- you just know it’s there. That’s faith.”

These lines, from the movie, “Unlimited,” were written by executive producer Dr. Harold Finch.

Should Christians Be Organ Donors?

By Justina Miller on August 30, 2016

In the Christian movie, “God’s Compass,” Suzanne Waters’ husband receives a new heart and a few more years with his family because of another man’s death. As with most organ donations, the story in “God’s Compass” is simultaneously hopeful and devastating. It means the end of one man’s life, yet the continuation of another. In this way, organ donation is a beautiful demonstration of how God works all things for the good (Romans 8:28). However, the question remains: is organ donation okay? Some Christians feel that they should preserve their bodies. Others have trouble with the organ harvesting industry. What’s a Christian to do?

How to Keep A Full Heart When Your Nest is Empty

By Greg Gudorf on August 27, 2016

The empty nest often happens gradually. The kids go off to college, but the house often returns to normal chaos in the summer. Still, no matter how gradual the process is, there is nothing that can prepare you for the day the last child leaves. Converting your child’s bedroom to the guest room you’ve always wanted suddenly seems much less satisfying, and the house that you thought was too small now feels oversized and hollow.

Walking Where Jesus Walked: A Holy Land Memoir

By Sarah Hartland on August 21, 2016

Shortly after landing in Tel Aviv, all forty three of us tired American students shuffled onto the large tour bus that would be our transportation for the next eight days. 5 Ways to Cope with Loss and Trust in God’s Plan

By Justina Miller on August 19, 2016

"She was no longer wrestling with the grief, but could sit down with it as a lasting companion and make it a sharer in her thoughts."

These words by George Eliot perfectly capture the character of Suzanne Waters in the Christian movie, “God’s Compass.” Though we never actually meet Suzanne Waters’ late husband in the film, we come to know his character through her stories of him, his old artifacts around her house, and even the brief sentences Suzanne says out loud to him, confident that he can hear her from heaven. Suzanne no longer wrestles with her grief, but it still lingers like a “lasting companion.” However, even in her loss, she finds joy and purpose in channeling her love toward those that God has put in her life.

Though grief cannot be completely erased until we are in heaven, we can, like Suzanne Waters, find solace in God’s plan for us and for our loved ones. If you have recently  experienced a great loss in your life, here are 5 ways that may help you to cope.

By Justina Miller on August 4, 2016

“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.” These first lines of Proverbs 31:10-31, like a disclaimer, warn us, “Ok, Ladies, this is going to be hard.” But we know it’s a good hard- like running a marathon or growing a garden. We also see that the “wife of noble character” is not an outdated example, but her strength and her grace are just as relevant today as they were in the days when Solomon penned Proverbs. Weak People Revenge, Strong People Forgive

By Justina Miller on July 19, 2016

Have you ever stopped to wonder if you hold grudges? Your immediate answer may be, “No. I’m a Christian.” But when we look harder at social circles from church, school, or family, there are always those individuals that have hurt us or just plain get on our nerves. We don’t necessarily wish evil upon these people, but we’ll avoid them in the parking lot or drop their names in gossipy conversations. However, gossip and avoidance are tiny acts of revenge, and rather than building community, they build hardness in our hearts.
