Looking for Peace? Here's How to Let Go and Let God

Have you heard the expression, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans?” This little idiom reminds us that though we may try to control our lives, our plans are ultimately up to God, who rules the world with His wisdom. Yet, it is not enough to simply know that God is in control, we must actively surrender to His plans for us, a task that is much harder than it sounds.

In the movie “New Life,” married couple Ben and Ava learn how to let God take control during Ava’s battle with cancer. Ben’s first response to Ava’s diagnosis was, “We’re not going to let this happen,” but through trust in God’s plan, they both come to accept that God knows what he is doing even  His wisdom isn’t evident. In surrendering to God, Ben and Ava learn to cherish the moments they have together, or as Ben says in “New Life,”

"We changed our perspectives and the world changed around us.”

Want to Let Go and Let God? Start by Being Still.

Whatever battle you’re facing, you will only win when you surrender your plans to God. The Lord tells us to:

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10, NIV).

This Psalm shows us that we must have the faith to accept what comes our way and the humility to know that God is not giving us more than we can handle. Practice “being still” by placing your trust in God’s plan for you. If you need extra comfort, take time to relax and pray, sharing your feelings with Him.

Cast Your Cares on Him, and He Will Protect Them.

God wants you to:

“Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7, NIV).

Author Saviela E. Thorne writes in an article for “The Praying Woman” that God loves and cares about you with an everlasting love. Any father who loves their child with an everlasting love, will always have their best interest at heart. When your heart is placed in the hands of God, He doesn’t abuse it, He protects it. Once you let go and let God, He will provide guidance down the path He intended for you.

Good News: God is Working, and His Plan is the Best One.

Although surrendering to God can feel like giving up, that is certainly not the case.. We should always do all we can to work with God in orchestrating His plans for our life. However, sometimes working with God means letting go of the wheel and giving Him the opportunity to drive us toward something beautiful in our lives.

In his letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul reminds us that God’s plan is always the best plan. He tells us:

“We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28, NIV)

While we know that God is in control, it can still be frightening to surrender to his ways. Remember that you can and should keep praying for your needs, knowing that:

“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer" (Matthew 21:22, NIV).
